Reflecting Olveston’s character
We are inspired by the Olveston Design Statement and Olveston Conservation Area to make sure the Gables Olveston joins the DNA of the village.
Matching the village
With the Parish Council, we will create a ‘design code’ to guide the style and material choice for the Gables Olveston so that it matches the village’s historic character. Some aspects of the design code could include:
- Make buildings look wide when facing open areas, following a historic style.
- Roofs should have triangular ends (called gable ends).
- Add chimneys for variety in the skyline.
- Use symmetry and repetition in the design.
- Prefer using limestone and render materials.
- Avoid using regular brick as the primary material, if possible.
- Give a modern twist to the use of render and stone, which may include timber, clay, and tiling.
The use of cobble/ granite highways features will also be consistent with Olveston’s character.
Protecting views and residential space
The following steps will help to combine the Gables Olveston seamlessly within village.
- New buildings at least 15 metres away from the nearest residential boundary and 25 metres from the rear of existing buildings arranged back-to-back. This ensures the privacy and well-being of current residents on Vicarage Lane (see diagram above).
- Village Green open to the public, including retained views of St Mary’s Church.
- Planting to provide further visual buffering to the school playground.
- Additional planting to help lessen the visual impact from long-distance.
